Exploring the heart of Central Europe, these five self-guided city walks offer an intimate glimpse into the vibrant histories and cultures of Prague, Czechia; Bratislava, Slovakia; and Budapest, Hungary.

These guides take you to at least 20 of the most iconic locations of each city. We provide a link to Google Maps so you can see where you are in relation to the walking path and each location.

There are two walks in Prague. Wander through the enchanting Old Town, where cobblestone streets lead to iconic landmarks like the Astronomical Clock and Old Town Square. Cross the historic Charles Bridge to Lesser Town, a picturesque district filled with baroque architecture and charming alleyways, crowned by the majestic Prague Castle.

Stroll through the compact yet captivating Old Town in Bratislava, with its blend of medieval towers and modern sculptures. Highlights include St Martin’s Cathedral and the lively Hviezdoslav Square, perfect for a leisurely break.

Budapest offers a tale of two cities with two walks, one on each side of the Danube. In Buda, climb Castle Hill to explore the regal Buda Castle and Fisherman’s Bastion, offering stunning views over the Danube. Cross the Chain Bridge to Pest, where the grand boulevards reveal the Hungarian Parliament Building, vibrant markets, and elegant plazas.

Each of these five city walks presents a unique narrative, inviting travellers to discover the essence of Central Europe’s rich heritage.

Budapest (Pest) Self-Guided City Walk

Budapest the capital city of Hungary is one of Europe’s great cities and has magnificent buildings on both sides of the Danube. The city got its name from the 1873 unification of three cities, Buda and Óbuda on the west bank of the Danube river, and Pest on the east bank.

This Budapest Self-Guided City Walk walk will guide you to the key sites of the Pest side of the city including the magnificent Parliament, the haunting Shoe Memorial, several fabulous plazas and quirky ruin pubs.

Walk Distance 7.3km/4.5m on a mostly flat path.

Budapest (Buda) Self-Guided City Walk

Budapest the capital city of Hungary is one of Europe’s great cities with magnificent buildings on both sides of the Danube. The city got its name from the 1873 unification of three cities, Buda and Óbuda on the hilly west bank of the Danube river, and Pest on the flat east bank.

Settlement of the area began in the 4th century BC with a Celtic settlement which transformed into the Roman town of Aquincum. The Ottomans occupied the region for 150 years before the Hapsburgs ended their occupation in the name of Austria in 1686.

This walk will guide you to the key sites of the Buda side of the city including a fortress, a castle, a spectacular fountain and some of the best views of any city in Europe. The Pest side of the city is covered in a separate city walk here.

Walk Distance 5.3km / 3.3m with significant climbs up to the Citadella and Buda Castle, although the Citadella can be accessed by bus, and Buda Castle can be accessed by funicular or bus.
