Bern Self-Guided City Walk

The Old Town (Altstadt) of Bern is situated on a peninsula in a loop of the Aare River. The city traces its origins back to the 12th century, with medieval architecture preserved like the tower known as the Zytglogge. The Bern Self-Guided City Walk will guide you to the key sites of this historic city.

In 1983, the historic old town center of Bern (Innere Stadt) became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Switzerland has no official capital city, but Bern is the de-facto seat of government as the Swiss Parliament meets here in the Neo-Renaissance Bundeshaus (Federal Palace).
