Germany – Berlin

Berlin Self Guided City Walk

Berlin Self-Guided City Walk

Berlin, the City of Freedom is the capital city of Germany. Since the 13th century, it has been a major city. Berlin became the capital of the Margraviate of Brandenburg in 1417 and then the Kingdom of Prussia from 1701.

Following World War II, Berlin was divided into East and West. A wall was built in 1961 isolating West Berlin. Following the fall of Communism in 1989, most of the wall was removed, but a few sections are still standing and are popular tourist locations.

Today Berlin is known for its festivals, diverse architecture, nightlife, contemporary arts and more than 150 museums.

Freiburg Self-Guided City Walk

Freiburg im Breisgau is a city that sits in the southwest of Germany’s Black Forest. The city is famous for its reconstructed medieval wooden buildings.

The old town is compact and easy to walk around. Highlights of the walk include The Munsterplatz with stunning buildings surrounding the magnificent cathedral, the old Town Hall, the bright House of the Whales, the highly decorated Merchants’ Hall, and the two remaining medieval gates.

Keep an eye out for a unique city feature, the Bächle (little streams) that crisscross the old town. These were built nearly 600 years ago as a water supply.
