Budapest (Buda) Self-Guided City Walk

Budapest the capital city of Hungary is one of Europe’s great cities with magnificent buildings on both sides of the Danube. The city got its name from the 1873 unification of three cities, Buda and Óbuda on the hilly west bank of the Danube river, and Pest on the flat east bank.

Settlement of the area began in the 4th century BC with a Celtic settlement which transformed into the Roman town of Aquincum. The Ottomans occupied the region for 150 years before the Hapsburgs ended their occupation in the name of Austria in 1686.

This walk will guide you to the key sites of the Buda side of the city including a fortress, a castle, a spectacular fountain and some of the best views of any city in Europe. The Pest side of the city is covered in a separate city walk here.

Walk Distance 5.3km / 3.3m with significant climbs up to the Citadella and Buda Castle, although the Citadella can be accessed by bus, and Buda Castle can be accessed by funicular or bus.
