Best Day Trips from Zadar, Croatia (National Parks, Islands & Historic Towns)

Sharing is caring!

Zadar is one of the best bases in Croatia for day trips. Few cities give you such easy access to national parks, islands, and historic coastal towns — all within a short drive or boat ride.

If you’re staying in Zadar for more than a couple of nights, adding a few day trips is an easy way to see more of Croatia without constantly changing accommodation. We often say it’s better to spend longer in one place and explore from there, and Zadar is ideal for exactly that style of travel.

This guide covers the best day trips from Zadar, with a mix of nature, culture, and relaxed coastal stops. Most can be done independently with a car, while others work just as well on organised tours.

Before heading out, we recommend spending time exploring Zadar itself. The old town is compact, walkable, and rich in history — and it’s best discovered on foot. Our Croatia City Walks include a self-guided Zadar walk that fits perfectly around day trips, letting you explore the city calmly before or after your excursions.

Why Use Zadar as a Base?

Zadar sits on the northern Dalmatian coast, surrounded by four national parks, a large island archipelago, and several historic towns. Roads are excellent, distances are short, and you can easily mix half-day and full-day outings.

It’s also far less hectic than Split or Dubrovnik, making it easier to enjoy early starts or relaxed evenings back in the city.

1. Krka National Park

Krka National Park is one of the most popular day trips from Zadar, and for good reason. Wooden walkways wind past waterfalls, river pools, and lush greenery, making it an easy and rewarding visit.

Most visitors head straight to Skradinski Buk, the park’s most famous waterfall, but if you’re driving, keep your entry ticket and continue inland. A highlight is Visovac Island, home to a Franciscan monastery built in the 14th century — a surprisingly peaceful stop that many tour groups miss.

Krka can be visited by car or by boat via Skradin. If you’re short on time, it works well as a half-day trip.

2. Paklenica National Park

Paklenica National Park is where the mountains meet the sea. Known for its dramatic limestone canyons, Paklenica is a favourite with hikers and climbers, particularly around the sheer rock face of Anica Kuk.

Even if hiking or climbing isn’t your thing, the park is still worth visiting. Shaded walking paths, cooler temperatures, and forest scenery make it an easy nature escape from the coast. Near the entrance, you’ll also find spots to rest and cool off by the water.

Paklenica is an easy and flexible day trip from Zadar, especially if you enjoy quieter natural landscapes.

3. Šibenik

Šibenik is one of our favourite coastal towns in Croatia and an excellent day trip from Zadar. With a medieval old town rising from the waterfront, it has a different feel from the Roman-built cities further north.

Šibenik has been ruled by Venetians, Hungarians, Byzantines, and Austrians, and its defensive past is still visible today. Four fortresses — including St Nicholas Fortress, a UNESCO site — guard the city.

The Cathedral of St James is the highlight. As you walk around its exterior, look for the 71 carved stone heads lining the walls — a detail that makes Šibenik especially memorable.

4. Island Hopping from Zadar

Zadar’s position on the Adriatic makes it a perfect launch point for island trips. Along the seafront promenade, you’ll find operators offering half-day and full-day excursions.

Many tours visit the Kornati National Park, a stunning collection of mostly uninhabited islands known for clear water and rugged landscapes. Swimming, snorkelling, and relaxed cruising are usually part of the day.

Returning to Zadar by boat in the late afternoon, just in time for sunset, is often a highlight in itself.

If you prefer to plan ahead, island trips can also be booked online rather than at the pier.

5. Novigrad

Novigrad makes an easy and relaxed half-day trip from Zadar. Often called the “Croatian Portofino,” the town sits at the end of a narrow inlet where the sea reaches deep inland.

Stone houses line the water, fishing boats bob in the harbour, and a fortress overlooks the town. It’s a lovely place for a coffee, a short wander, and a slower pace before returning to Zadar.

A Longer Day Trip: Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Lakes National Park can be visited as a long day trip from Zadar, but it’s best enjoyed with an overnight stay nearby if you have the time.

We arrived mid-afternoon on our first visit, enjoying quieter paths and evening light, then returned early the next morning for a completely different experience. The network of lakes, waterfalls, and wooden walkways is one of Croatia’s most impressive natural sights.

If you do visit as a day trip, start early and be prepared for a full day.

Getting Around for Day Trips

Most of these day trips are easiest with a car, especially if you want flexibility or plan to visit multiple stops. Roads are well maintained, and driving is straightforward.

If you don’t want to drive, Krka National Park and island tours are easily accessible by organised excursions from Zadar.

How Long Should You Stay in Zadar?

If you plan to take day trips, we recommend at least five to seven nights in Zadar. This gives you time to:

  • Explore the old town properly

  • Add two or three day trips

  • Enjoy unplanned moments like swims, café stops, and sunsets

Zadar rewards travellers who slow down rather than rush through.

Explore Zadar on Foot Before You Go Further

Before heading out to national parks or islands, take time to understand Zadar itself. Its Roman ruins, medieval churches, and waterfront are best explored on foot.

Our Croatia City Walks include a self-guided Zadar walk, designed for travellers who want structure without tours — ideal if Zadar is your base for day trips.

Planning More of Croatia?

Zadar isn’t just a destination — it’s a gateway. And if you use it well, it opens the door to some of the best experiences in Croatia.
